Zach Bryan is an American country singer and songwriter known for his raw vocals, emotionally direct songwriting and blend of country, folk, Americana and Red Dirt influences. Born Zachary Lane Bryan on April 2, 1996, in Japan while his parents were serving in the United States Navy, he was raised primarily in Oologah, Oklahoma. He first gained widespread attention through songs he recorded and shared online while serving in the Navy before becoming one of the most successful country music artists of his generation.
Bryan’s rise to fame was unusually rapid. He independently released his first albums, DeAnn in 2019 and Elisabeth in 2020, before signing with Warner Records and releasing American Heartbreak in 2022. His breakthrough song “Something in the Orange” helped establish him as a major name in country music, while his 2023 self titled album and the Grammy winning song “I Remember Everything” with Kacey Musgraves further expanded his audience.
Beyond music, Zach Bryan has a background that includes eight years of service in the United States Navy. He continued writing and recording songs during his military career before receiving an honorable discharge in 2021 to pursue music full time. By 2026, he had released his sixth studio album, With Heaven on Top, and embarked on the large scale With Heaven on Tour across North America and Europe.
Zach Bryan’s Early Life
Zachary Lane Bryan was born on April 2, 1996, in Japan while his parents, Dewayne Bryan and Annette DeAnn Bryan, were serving in the United States Navy. He grew up with his sister, MacKenzie, in a family with a strong military tradition. His father, mother, grandfather, uncles and great grandfather all had connections to the Navy, making military service an important part of his childhood environment.
When Bryan was around 12 years old, his parents divorced, and he eventually moved with his family to Oologah, Oklahoma. His mother later died in 2016 after struggling with alcohol abuse. Her death became an important influence on Bryan’s songwriting, and he later named his debut album DeAnn after her middle name.
Bryan began playing guitar and writing songs as a teenager. By the age of 14, he had started creating songs with friends, although he did not initially expect songwriting to become his profession. He attended Oologah High School, where he wrestled and served as student council president. At 17, following the family tradition of military service, he enlisted in the United States Navy.
Zach Bryan’s Education
Zach Bryan attended Oologah High School in Oklahoma after his family settled in Oologah during his teenage years. His time at the school was marked by both academic responsibilities and extracurricular activities. He participated in wrestling and became student council president while also developing his interest in guitar and songwriting.
After high school, Bryan did not immediately follow the traditional college route. Instead, he enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of 17 and spent eight years serving as an aviation ordnanceman. During his military service, he continued to educate himself through reading, songwriting and personal study while developing the music that eventually launched his professional career.
Bryan later completed a bachelor’s degree in psychology while already working as a professional musician. He studied while touring and taking examinations in unusual locations, including backstage areas and other stops during his travels. In December 2023, he announced that he had completed his degree, describing it as the fulfillment of a promise he had made to his late mother.

In 2019, Bryan released his debut album DeAnn, which was named after his late mother. He followed it with Elisabeth in 2020, with the song “Heading South” becoming an important early breakthrough after a video of Bryan performing the song circulated widely online. In 2021, he made his debut at the Grand Ole Opry and signed with Warner Records before receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy so he could pursue music full time.
Bryan’s major commercial breakthrough arrived in 2022 with American Heartbreak, his first major label album. The triple album reached the top five of the Billboard 200 and helped turn him from an internet driven independent artist into a major country music performer. Its single “Something in the Orange” became one of his signature songs and introduced his music to a much wider audience.
In 2023, Bryan released his self titled album, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. The album included “I Remember Everything,” a duet with Kacey Musgraves that earned Bryan his first Grammy Award for Best Country Duo or Group Performance. He followed it with The Great American Bar Scene in 2024, continuing to combine country, folk and Americana influences with highly personal songwriting.
Bryan continued expanding his career through major tours, music releases and business agreements surrounding his catalog. His 2024 Quittin’ Time Tour generated nearly $200 million in reported gross revenue, while his 2026 album With Heaven on Top marked another major chapter in his career. His story has become closely associated with the changing relationship between independent artists, digital audiences and the traditional music business.
His songwriting has also become a defining part of his legacy. Songs such as “Something in the Orange,” “Pink Skies” and “I Remember Everything” have connected his personal storytelling style with a large mainstream audience. His Grammy win for “I Remember Everything” further established his place among recognised contemporary country music artists.
