J.J. McCarthy became a major topic of discussion in September 2026 following his trade from the Minnesota Vikings to the New York Giants. The Giants acquired the young quarterback in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round draft pick, with the transaction subject to McCarthy passing a physical. The move marked a significant change in his NFL career after he had spent his first two seasons with Minnesota.

His arrival also attracted attention because of his status as a former 10th overall draft pick and his experience as a college national champion at Michigan.
Despite the trade, McCarthy was not immediately named the Giants’ starting quarterback. Head coach John Harbaugh confirmed that Jameis Winston would remain the team’s starter, while McCarthy would join the quarterback group alongside Jake Haener. He missed his entire 2024 rookie season because of a torn right meniscus before making 10 starts for Minnesota in 2025.
