Born Joseph Vincent Flacco in Audubon, New Jersey, he became a national star during his time with the Baltimore Ravens, leading the franchise to victory in Super Bowl XLVII and earning Super Bowl MVP honors after one of the strongest postseason runs by a quarterback in NFL history.

Joe Flacco Early Life
Joseph Vincent Flacco was born on January 16, 1985, in New Jersey and was raised in Audubon, a small borough in Camden County. He was the oldest of six children born to Steve and Karen Flacco. His father had played college football and baseball, and the family maintained a strong sporting culture while Joe was growing up. His younger siblings also became involved in sports, with several pursuing football, baseball and other competitive activities.
Flacco grew up playing several sports rather than focusing exclusively on football. He competed in football, baseball and basketball at Audubon High School and developed a reputation as a gifted athlete with an unusually strong throwing arm. Baseball was also important to him, and his high school team won a state championship during his time there.
His physical development became noticeable during his teenage years. By his sophomore year of high school, he was already around 6 feet 4 inches tall, although he was initially quite slender. His combination of size and arm strength eventually made him an attractive quarterback prospect. At Audubon High School, he passed for 5,137 yards during his career and earned recognition as a two-time All-South Jersey selection.
Joe Flacco Education
Flacco attended Audubon High School in New Jersey, where he became the starting quarterback for the Green Wave while also playing baseball and basketball. His football performances helped establish him as a college prospect, although he was not initially regarded as one of the nation’s elite quarterback recruits.
After graduating from high school, he accepted a scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh. He joined the Panthers in 2003 and was redshirted during his freshman season. In 2004, he served primarily as a backup to Tyler Palko and appeared in only three games. His limited opportunities at Pittsburgh eventually contributed to his decision to transfer.
Flacco transferred to the University of Delaware in 2005. Because of NCAA transfer rules, he could not play during his first season with the Blue Hens, but he used the period to learn the offense and prepare for his opportunity. He became Delaware’s starting quarterback in 2006 and developed into one of the most productive players in the program’s history. In his final two seasons, he passed for 7,046 yards and 41 touchdowns, set numerous school records and led Delaware to the 2007 FCS national championship game. He was inducted into the University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.
Joe Flacco Career
Joe Flacco entered the NFL after the Baltimore Ravens selected him 18th overall in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft. The selection made him the highest-drafted quarterback in the history of the Ravens franchise at the time. He immediately became Baltimore’s starting quarterback and started all 16 regular-season games as a rookie.
His first season was particularly notable because he became the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to win multiple playoff games. Baltimore reached the AFC Championship Game, and Flacco’s ability to perform in the postseason quickly became one of the defining characteristics of his early career. He remained the Ravens’ starting quarterback throughout his first 11 seasons, becoming one of the most durable players at his position.
Flacco’s greatest achievement came during the 2012 season. The Ravens entered the playoffs as a wild-card team but went on an impressive postseason run. Flacco delivered several important performances, including a famous 70-yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Jones against the Denver Broncos in the divisional round. Baltimore eventually reached Super Bowl XLVII against the San Francisco 49ers.
In the Super Bowl, Flacco completed 22 of 33 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns without throwing an interception. Baltimore defeated San Francisco 34-31, giving the Ravens their second Super Bowl championship. Flacco was named Super Bowl MVP after throwing 11 touchdown passes without an interception throughout the four-game postseason.
The championship dramatically changed his position within the NFL. In March 2013, the Ravens signed him to a six-year contract worth $120.6 million. At the time, the deal made Flacco the highest-paid player in NFL history. It included $52 million in guaranteed money and reflected the value Baltimore placed on the quarterback after his Super Bowl-winning season.
Flacco continued as Baltimore’s starter for several more seasons. He helped the Ravens reach the playoffs multiple times and became the franchise’s long-term quarterback during the post-Super Bowl period. His tenure eventually came to an end in 2019 when Baltimore traded him to the Denver Broncos after the emergence of Lamar Jackson.
Flacco’s time in Denver lasted only one season. He started the 2019 campaign but suffered a neck injury that ended his season early. The Broncos released him in March 2020, and he subsequently joined the New York Jets as a veteran backup to Sam Darnold. Injuries again created opportunities for him to start, and he appeared in five games for the Jets in 2020.
In 2021, Flacco briefly joined the Philadelphia Eagles before returning to the Jets through a trade. He continued to provide veteran quarterback depth and received additional starting opportunities during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Although his role had changed from his years as Baltimore’s franchise quarterback, he remained an experienced NFL option.
His career took another unexpected turn in 2023. After remaining unsigned through the first 11 weeks of the season, Flacco joined the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad in November. He eventually became the team’s starting quarterback after a series of injuries affected Cleveland’s quarterback room.
Flacco started five regular-season games for the Browns and completed 123 of 204 passes for 1,616 yards, 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He helped Cleveland win four consecutive games in December and secure a playoff berth. His performances earned him the Associated Press NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.
The Browns’ season ended with a playoff loss to the Houston Texans, but Flacco’s late-season performance became one of the most memorable veteran quarterback comebacks of the era. His return to relevance also demonstrated that he could still operate effectively in an NFL offense more than a decade after entering the league.
Flacco joined the Indianapolis Colts in 2024 before returning to Cleveland in 2025. Later that year, Cincinnati acquired him from the Browns in a trade. He started multiple games for the Bengals when Joe Burrow was unavailable and produced 2,479 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions during the 2025 season. He was selected to his first Pro Bowl.
In March 2026, Flacco became an unrestricted free agent when his Bengals contract expired. Cincinnati subsequently re-signed him to a one-year contract on March 25, 2026. The agreement kept him in the Bengals’ quarterback room alongside Burrow and marked the beginning of his 19th NFL season. His 2026 contract is reported at $6 million, with additional incentives that can increase the value of the deal.
At 41, Flacco entered the 2026 season as one of the oldest active players in the NFL and the oldest player in Bengals history. His role is primarily as Burrow’s backup, but his previous season demonstrated that he can still step into a starting role when required. Cincinnati’s coaching staff has also valued his experience and knowledge of the game.
Through his career, Flacco has played for eight NFL franchises and accumulated more than 48,000 passing yards. His career has stretched from the 2008 NFL Draft through multiple generations of quarterbacks, making his longevity one of the defining features of his professional story.
